Relying on the synths to carry most of the tune, this song gets you foot tapping along quite quickly and the lyrics are quite easy to sing along with, which brings half the fun of listening to the song. Thankfully, the subject matter gets a little less depressing in Techno Fan, the song that pulled me back into the world of The Wombats on that rainy day in April 2011.

This track is one that I have always felt would be perfect for any reboot of the 90’s MTV series Daria due to its tone and desire to focus more on alternative music, but where this song shines is in the lyrics, as Matthew Murphy manages to weave a tale about self hate and selfishness, and the song is one that resonates with me pretty much every time I listen to it, while the upbeat tone of the music does very well to hide the fact that the song is actually super depressing. The next track, Last Night I Dreamt, may be my pick for most underrated Wombats song (Up there with School Uniforms and Pink Lemonade), due to it not being released as a single at any stage during the bands career. My only real criticism of the song is its placing in the album, as it kind of detracts from the great party feel the band was going for in the first half of the album, but it does allow for a nice breather. The track is the most laid back one on the album, forgoing the synths in favor of violins and what we get is a song that builds over the course of the track while letting us get invested in the story the lyrics tell. A nihilistic anthem, this track is one that is great fun to sing along with, despite the rather awkward subject matter but all of it doesn’t matter when the track kicks into its fantastic bridge, which lets the guitars go wild and keeps you bobbing along thanks to the insanely good drum work by Dan Haggis.įollowing on from the last track is Anti-D, arguably the most personal song on the album as it relates to frontman Matthew Murphy’s addiction to drugs and the help he sought out during the production of the album. The track does well to blend the two schools of thought that the band was going through, mixing a lot of the original guitar led sound that made them so popular with the synth based sound the band would progress in the coming years and tracks. The albums strong start continues with Jump Into The Fog, the second single off the album. The song succeeds pretty much across the board as it is easy to see why this song is such a fan favorite. The song is a dance number through and through, with the catchy guitar riffs carrying you through the song and just enough of a small cool-down between each chorus and the next verse to let you go insane and still have enough left in the tank to sing along with Matthew Murphy. Hitting the synthesizers and relying on the fantastic guitar hooks that the band became well known for, the first track is one that gets you tapping along pretty quickly and excited for whatever ride this album is going to take you.Īs we jump into the second track, we get to hear the first single off the album in Tokyo (Vampires & Wolves), released back in 2010. The opening track Our Perfect Disease serves well as both a catchy opening track but also as proof of the bands change in the four years between their debut LP, A Guide To Love, Loss And Desperation and This Modern Glitch. As a result, This Modern Glitch is an album I have always been a fan of since first listen and up until the release of Glitterbug earlier in the year, was easily my favorite Wombats album and probably in the top five albums I have ever heard. This Modern Glitch was the album that pulled me into the world of indie music all the way back in 2011 and since then I have never really looked back. As this is the 50th content post by BWM since the reboot I thought I would use it to look at one of the albums that pretty much formulated who I am today. This review is going to be one a little different.
